Blog Post 4: Viruses and Bacteria

This week, we will be learning about viruses and bacteria. Please go to the following website and choose a disease to research: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/DiseasesIndex/DiseasesIndex the disease must be caused by a bacteria or virus

Answer the following questions in your post:

  • Is this disease caused by a bacteria or virus?
  • What are the symptoms of the disease?
  • What is the cause of the disease?
  • If this disease is a virus, is there a vaccination for it?
  • If this disease is a bacterial disease, what antibiotics are effective for treating it?
By WEDNESDAY, Feb 27th  respond to at least one classmate by doing one of the following:
  • Adding information you learned in class about that disease
  • Asking a question about the disease
  • Discussing an experience you had with that disease (either yourself or someone you know)

  1. Influenza is caused by a virus that attacks the respiratory system. Symptoms include: a high fever; tiredness/weakness; a runny nose; a dry cough; bodily and muscle aching; diarrhea (usually in children) or indigestion and headaches. It can be treated with an annual vaccination - this is your best shot at prevention.

    2. What I find interesting about this virus is that there are multiple species of virus that cause the flu, so it makes it harder to develop drugs for it. Do you know if they change the vaccine every year? The only time I've had the flu was in 4th grade. It's the sickest I've ever been, and since I don't get vaccines I was completely exposed to it. But I haven't had it since, thankfully.

  2. Cancer is caused by viruses that is forced within the body. Some symtoms are :Fatigue, Lump or thickening that can be felt under the skin, Weight changes, including unintended loss or gain and Difficulty swallowing. Cancer is caused by changes in the DNA within the cells (mutation). The DNA tell the cel how to grow and reproduce but when cancer happens the cell is out-of-control to grow and over reproduce. there is no certain way to prevent cancer. but doctors have identified many ways of reducing cancer risk by : stop smoking; Avoid excessive sun exposure; Schedule cancer screening exams and etc.

    1. My aunt is a breast cancer survivor, however, she was fighting cancer when I was young so I don't remember much of her fight. My aunt had a lump, like Tenzin mentioned, which she was curious about and went to the doctor. Sure enough it was cancer. Although Tenzin pretty much summed it up, the part that facinates me is the fact that the cells reproduce so rapidly. Also, normal cells lay out in a line, or organized ways, cancer cells stack unorganized. (Normal_______, Not normal__----__). I have so many questions about cancer, however nor you or the best doctor could answer them. Some releate to cancer and heredity.

    2. I know from experience, having three aunts effected by cancer, several ways to not necessarily cure by attempt to rid of cancer. One of my aunts, who was affected by breast cancer had a double mastectomy, which is where they literally cut the cancer cells out of you. Another one of my aunts, affected by a different kind of breast cancer, had radiation treatment. My third aunt, who has uterine cancer, had cancer cells both cut of her intestine and is now having a chemo therapy.

    3. My uncle had prostate cancer for a long time. He had to go through chemotherapy for a year. It was tough on my aunt especially, but it was also hard for me. He had a testicle removed where the cancer cells were which helped out a lot. It got easier on my aunt and uncle, but they are still worried that it may come back. Thank god he got better, because it would have klled me to loose him.

    5. Tenzin, all your info here is pretty accurate. From my own experiences, I know that cancer is hard to cure, some easier than others. Is there a sufficient to cancer in general? My mom succumbed to cancer ten years ago and medicines were different then. Have there been anymore advancements in curing cancer?

  3. The H1N1, or swine flu virus is very similar to the common influenza. The main symptom of this virus is a respiratory infection that includes a cough fatigue and fever. This disease is caused by exposure to infected pigs of exposure to an infected human. The Swine Flu vaccination is now included in the Influenza vaccine and any who get this vaccine will be protected. Although H1N1 was previously seen as an epidemic it's spread has been stopped and it is now controlled and is no longer a serious danger to society.

    3. I remember when this was going around in China - my school was closed for two days and we all had to get checked. I think it is interesting how the virus spreads between pigs and humans and could be mutated, so it is important to stay on top of the issue.

  4. Mononucleosis, or the kissing disease, is cause by a Epstein-Barr virus. Some symptoms of this disease are fatigue, headache, fever, and swollen lymph nodes in your neck and armpits. Mononucleosis is usually acquired by exchanging saliva with other humans. However, if one is exposed to a a sneeze or shares utensils with a person who has mono they will possibly get mono as well. There is no vaccination for mononucleosis, but it is not usually fatal so it is not that necessary.

    2. Mono is called the kissing disease because is is passed through saliva. I got mono when i was 7, but not really for the reasons i just said...

    3. When you say that it is not usually fatal, I must ask how many cases of it are fatal, because mono is a relatively common disease and what % of the infected actually die from it?

    4. I, however ended up not having it, was tested for mono this year. This was due to my symptoms of constantly being tired or fatigued, swollen lymph nodes and headaches. They said they had nothing to give me if I did have it, but you still need to know. Another symptom is swollen spleen, so you must sit out of sports.

    5. In 7th grade I was tested for mono. I had been feeling very light headed for a few weeks and was always tired and had headaches. I was also fainting, which isn't a common symptom of mono, but the fatigue could account for that. My doctor had no idea what was wrong with me so we tried every option and nothing came back positive. While I was waiting for the mono results I was very worried that if I did have it there is no cure except time.

  5. Hemolytic uremic syndrome, (HUS), is a disease caused by the bacteria Escherichia coli. Symptoms of E. coli include diarrhea, abdominal cramping, nausea, and vomiting. the disease is caused when a person ingests a harmful strain of E. Coli bacteria. Good E. Coli can normally be found in the human intestine and helps with digestion, but the types of E. Coli not suited to living in the human body cause damage. for certain strains of the disease there is no cure and one must just drink plenty of fluids and you can recover in 5-10 days. some can be treated with the use of the antibiotics amoxycillin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, ciprofloxacin, and nitrofurantoin.

  6. Viral hemorrhagic fevers are infectious diseases caused by viruses living on animals or insect hosts such as bats or mosquitoes. Some symptoms of these fevers include dizziness, weakness, and it can lead to kidney failure, bleeding of internal organs or eyes/mouth, and seizures as well. Viral hemorrhagic fevers are caused by a variety of viruses that transmit themselves through blood, urine, feces, or bites from carriers of the diseases. There is a yellow fever vaccination to help with the prevention viral hemorrhagic fevers, and the antiviral drug ribavirin has been shown to prevent complications and shorten the course of infection.

  7. Mumps is a disease caused by a virus. Not every person that is affected by mumps develop any symptoms. However, the people that do develop symptoms have swollen spots on the sides of their face (the salivary glands swell), weakness, little to no appetite, pain while eating, fevers, and frequent headaches. Mumps is caused by the mumps virus, which is spread through infected saliva. The mumps vaccine is contained in the MMR vaccine which is often a required vaccination that children get when they are very young.

  8. Pneumonia is the inflammation of lungs caused by an infection. The infection can be caused by bacteria or a virus, it depends on the case. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, they include fever, cough, sweating, shortness of breath, headaches, and fatigue. The most common causes for pneumonia are germs from generic bacteria and viruses in the environment entering your lungs. Treatment for pneumonia depends entirely on the case and the person. Antivirals, fever reducers, and cough medicine are often the basic medicines for bacterial pneumonia.

This disease is caused by exposure to infected pigs or exposure to another human with the virus. There is a vaccination for this virus which is now included in the influenza vaccine. Although there was a major epidemic when this virus was introduced, it is not completely under control.

  14. Whipple's disease is caused by a bacterial infection, and most often occurs in the gastrointestinal system. It is a very rare infection. Some common symptoms include diarrhea, weight loss due to difficulty in absorbing nutrition from food, abdominal pain or cramps, fatigue, low healthy red count (anemia), and joint pain. Some less common symptoms may include: fever, memory loss, seizures, difficulty walking, chest pain, enlarged spleen and/or lymph nodes, and visual impairment. The disease occurs when the bacterium Trophyrema whipplei infects the small intestines, forming lesions and damaging the intestinal villi. Usually, several antibiotics are taken simultaneously to cure the disease. For mild cases, 14 days of IV ceftriaxone is usually prescribed, followed by oral sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim for one or two years. In very severe cases, a combination of doxycycline and hydroxychloroquine can be used to treat theillness over a 12 to 18 month period.

  15. Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria. The symptoms can differ, depending on weather it is an early symptom or a later one. Early symptoms include a rash or flu-like symptoms. Later symptoms include joint pain, neurological problems, heart problems, eye inflammation, and liver inflammation. The cause of this disease is borrelia burgdorferi, a bacteria, which is carried by deer ticks. The ticks are brown and are usually very small, and nearly impossible to spot. To get lyme disease, an infected deer tick must bite you. Oral antibiotics or intravenous antibiotics can be taken to treat this disease.

  16. Rabies caused by a virus that is passed on through saliva, usually in a bite. Symptoms include anxiety, confusion, difficulty swallowing, hallucinations, insomnia, and partial paralysis. The rabies virus is transferred from the saliva of one animal into another animal via a bite, or through mucus membranes. Any animal could be carrying the Rabies virus. There is a series vaccines you can take to prevent the infection from taking hold once you have been bitten by an infected animal. 18. E. Coli is a bacteria generally found in the intestines of a healthy person or animal. A symptom of E. Coli is a medium to severe stomach cramp that may include diarrhea. The cause of this is contaminated water and uncooked ground beef. Antibiotics that can resolve E. Coli is azithromycin or more commonly called Zythromax. Since this is a very preventable sickness, the best way to avoid it is to make sure your beef and vegetables are cooked enough, and drink water that has been treated, or in other words, don't drink out of rivers or lakes.

Then, red spots appear on your face, and other parts of the body. In a few days they turn into blisters full of fluid, which turns to pus. Scabs form and fall off, leaving scars. Spallpox is caused face to face, but requires a long time to spread. Like other diseases, it's transmitted when a person coughs or sneezes, and through contact. There is no cure for smallpox, but there is treatment that relieves symptoms. Also, if a bacterial infection also occurs, there are anti-biotics. Some, such as fevers and headaches, are part of a mild disease caused by the virus. In severe cases, some symptoms can be as serious as encephalitis (swelling of the brain) and meningitis. It is caused by mosquito bites, because mosquitoes receive the virus from some infected birds. No vaccination is required for the mild symptoms, but the serious symptoms are not curable through vaccinations. Scientists are investigating interferon therapy, which might be able to treat encephalitis.

Some causes are overusage of your voice, like with excessive yelling or singing. It is also caused by viral infections and is very rarely caused by bacterial infections, like diphtheria. In the case of a viral infection, which is the most common, it can be treated on it's own without the use of antibiotics, which wouldn't help anyway. The symptoms are irritated and itchy skin, a rash which first appears to be bug bites, and scabs filled with liquid that burst and crust over. Other symptoms include fever, slight headache, pain in the abdominal area, dry coughing, and decrease in appetite. The chickenpox is caused by a virus called varicella-zoster, and is very contagious. It can be spread by contact directly to the rash, and by particles in the air from coughing or sneezing. There is a vaccination available for the chickenpox and is highly encouraged. It is administered twice, in most children first between 12 and 15 months, and second between 4 and 6 years old. 30. Salmonella infection is a disease caused by bacteria. People who are infected by Salmonella typically have diarrhea, a fever and/or abdominal cramps. These symptoms last anywhere from eight to seventy-two hours. However, if this disease spreads to the intestines, it can be life-threatening. The causes of Salmonella usually are food being left out at room tempature, contaminated eggs, meat, poultry, cheese and some select nuts. Sometimes the environment animals are kept in can be a cause too. Since this disease is bacterial, antibiotics can be taken orally. If diarrhea is extreme, rehydration is necessary. Antibiotics, such as ampicillin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, or ciprofloxacin, are not usually necessary unless the infection spreads from the intestines. Like we discussed in class, some Salmonella bacteria have become resistant to antibiotics.

  31. Influenza (the flu) is caused by a virus that attacks the respiratory system. Symptoms of this disease include a fever of over 100 F, aching muscles, chills, sweats, headache, dry cough, fatigue, weakness, and nasal congestion. Flu viruses travel through the air when some one with the infection sneezes, coughs, or talks. You can catch the flu from directly inhaling these droplets or by picking up the germs from an object (such as a doorknob) and then transferring them to your mouth or eyes. The antiviral medications for the flu are called oseltamivir and zanamivir. An annual vaccination is recommended for all Americans over the age of 6 months. The best advice for someone with the flu is to get lots of rest and drink lots of fluids. Simply washing your hands and covering your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough can go a long way towards preventing the spread of the flu.

  39. Lyme Disease is caused by a bacteria called Borrelia bergdorferi. Symptoms of Lyme disease are fever, flu-like symptoms, and hallucinating. The cause of the disease is caused by a tick with the bacteria biting you and getting the bacteria into your blood. If the Lyme disease is caught early then antibiotics can easily cure it, however if the disease is caught later the consequences can be very dangerous. One effective antibiotic is deoxycycline.

    1. My friend's brother had Lyme disease. He had to get a lot of shots every week and was out of school for a very long time. My dad had a deer tick that had the indications of it but the doctors caught it early enough that it didn't effect him because he took an antibiotic for 10 days

    1. My uncle, Ralph Cutshall, suffers from Kartagener’s syndrome which I believe leads to biyearly pneumonia (don't quote me on this, I heard it from an unreliable relative). He works as a road worker and this pneumonia really deteriorates him and his work. The pneumonia also is backed by the environmental effects of pouring asphalt in Northern Texas, such as the dusty air and hot sun. The combination of the virus and the other effects has lead him to take several breaks from working. Thankfully he recently got a persecution on Bactrim which has helped with the symptoms of pneumonia.

Rabies is a disease caused by a deadly virus. The symptoms don't occur until late in the disease, but can include; fever, headache, agitation, anxiety, confusion, difficulty swallowing, excessive salvation, fear of water, hallucinations, insomnia, and partial paralysis. There are two medications to treat rabies- A fast-acting shot for immediately after someone was infected, and a series of shots over 14 days to completely eliminate the virus.

    1. Rabies sounds awful. Can someone die of rabies? What happens without a cure? I have never had rabies, nor anyone I know. The closest I have been to someone with rabies is when the squirrel Hammy in Over the Hedge steals the girl scout cookies by pretending to be a rabid squirrel.

    2. How is the disease generally transmitted? Can it only be transmitted through bites or other things?
