Answer the following questions in your post:
- Is this disease caused by a bacteria or virus?
- What are the symptoms of the disease?
- What is the cause of the disease?
- If this disease is a virus, is there a vaccination for it?
- If this disease is a bacterial disease, what antibiotics are effective for treating it?
By MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27th respond to at least one classmate by doing one of the following:
- Adding information you learned in class about that disease
- Asking a question about the disease
- Discussing an experience you had with that disease (either yourself or someone you know)
Influenza is a viral infecion. The most common symptoms of the disease are chills, fever, sore throat, muscle pains, severe headache, coughing, weakness/fatigue.This virus is caused by RNA viruses of the family Orthomyxoviridae (the influenza viruses). Yes there is a vaccine for this virus.
ReplyDeleteI also studied influenza and learned that the people who are most risky to this infection are young children, older adults, and pregnant women. I also learned that this infection attacks your nose, throat and lungs. Also this infection is known as the flu how ever is not the same as the stomach flu viruses.
DeleteChickenpox is a viral infection. common symptoms of the disease are itchy blisters all over the body, fever headache, and stomach ache. Chickenpox are caused by the varicella-zoster virus. There is a vaccine for chickenpox which has mad the disease less common.
ReplyDeleteI got the chickenpox when i was in preschool, it is better to get it when your young. scientists are not completly shure the vaccine works so later in life people may get chickenpox even if they got the vacine. It is more lickly for people who get chickenpox later in life to develope a disease, which i dont know the name of. So, i am glad i got the chicken pox at a young age.
DeleteIs it true that if you get chicken pox when you older it's harder to get rid of? If so do you know if they are plannig on creating a vaccine or type of medicine to help cure faster? I havent gotten chicken pox yet thats why im concerned.
DeleteI know that when one gets the infection of chicken pox and it passes on the body adapts, and learns how to fight the virus so one would be further immune. A question i have is during the virus how do the spots actually form.I had the chicken pox when i was very little, naturally now i am immune.
DeleteThough its true when one gets the chicken pox their body adapts and learns how to furthermore fight the virus. however when i was little i got the Chicken Pox twice! this is possible yet rare, I got it very briefly and with a small dosage when I was 4, then again when my sister got it and I was 6, that time it was much worse.
DeleteInfluenza is a viral infection that attacks your nose, throat and lungs. Influenza, if known as the flu, is not the same as the stomach flu viruses. Influenza and its complications can be deadly. People that are in most risk are young children, older adults, pregnant women. The best cure for influenza is to receive an annual vaccination.
ReplyDeleteI got the flu (swine), and it was horrible. It attacked my nose, throat, and all my muscles, and I couldn't move very much.
DeleteTonsillitis is an infection caused by a virus that effects the tonsils located at the back of the throat. Symptoms of tonsillitis are sore throat, and difficulty swallowing. It's usually caused by a common virus but sometimes a bacterial infection can cause it. There are some medications that can be taken to help resolve the infection but it usually doesn't respond to that treatment in which case they need to be removed.
ReplyDeleteE coli is a bacteria that normally live in the small intestine, most varieties are harmless or cause brief diarrhea. The bad strains of E coli 0157:H7 can cause severe abdominal cramps bloody diarrhea and vomiting. This mainly comes from food such as raw vegetables or under cooked ground beef. Middle age men can usually over come this, but kids and the elderly can develop a kidney failure. Known antibiotics that help are vancomycin methicillin
ReplyDeleteRespiratory syncytial virus is a very common virus that infects the lungs and respiratory tract of most children by the time they reach the age of 2, Although the virus infects people of all ages. The RSV disease has similar symptoms that include a mild headache, dry cough, low fever, sore throat and runny nose. The infection can be taken care of using self-care measures. In certain cases with people with a bad immune system such as babies and older people the virus can be more severe and lead to other diseases such as pneumonia. There was no info. on any antibiotics for this disease.
ReplyDeleteChickenpox is a disease transmitted through viruses. Some symptoms of the disease are itchy blisters all over the body, fever headache, and stomach ache. The varicella-zoster virus causes Chicken Pox. A vaccine for chicken pox has been made which has made it less common among people.
ReplyDeleteBotulism is caused by toxins from a bacteria. Symptoms show between 12-36 hours after you have been exposed. If it is a wound, the symptoms may not show up for 10 days.difficulty swallowing, blurred vision, trouble breathing, and paralysis are a few. Unnoticed wounds, fermented food, or inhaling spores from cocaine can cause Botulism. Induced vomiting and/or an antitoxin injection can cure it.
ReplyDeleteCan Botulism be fatal and under what circumstances?
DeleteWest Nile virus is an infection that is spread by mosquitoes. Minor symptoms are fever and headache while more major symptoms include sever headache, sudden weakness and disorientation; there is a symptom that can prove fatal: inflammation of the brain. Mosquitoes spread West Nile virus. There is no vaccination yet.
ReplyDeleteHow come there is no vaccination yet for West Nile virus? do scientists not have enough information to make a cure or is the virus just incurrable?
DeleteHairy tongue is a disease that is benign but can make the tongue appear unattractive . Hairy tongue is caused by an overgrowth of bacteria in the mouth, giving the tongue a dark hairy appearance. Degrees of darkness can range from yellow discoloration to black, and although it may appear alarming, it is not harmful and usually resolves itself without medical treatment. Symptoms include bad breath, yellow, brown or black discoloration, hairy appearance, metallic or altered taste in the mouth and (in some people) a gagging sensation. Hairy tongue occurs when sections of the tongue called papillae, elongate and don't shed like they are supposed to. The causes of hairy tongue can't be determined, but potential causes include a change in the bacteria or yeast content of the mouth following the use of antibiotics, poor oral hygiene, excessively breathing in through the mouth, use of medication containing bismuth (Pepto-Bismol), regular use of mouthwash containing oxidizing agents such as peroxide, or astringent agents such as witch hazel or menthol, and heavy tobacco use.
ReplyDeleteSince the disease is not harmful, no medications are given to treat it. As previously stated, hairy tongue usually resolves itself, but the best way to shorten your experience with hairy tongue is to stop using tobacco products and medications containing bismuth, just talk to your doctor before stopping any medication. Also be sure to practice good hygiene habits and bursh your teeth and tongue twice a day.
Swine flu
ReplyDeleteIt is caused by a influenza virus, that was discovered in 2009. The symptoms are Fever, Cough, Sore throat, Bodyaches, Headache, Chills, Fatigue, Diarrhea, Vomiting. It is cause by the virus that was made by pigs. It is a virus, the vaccine is called tamiflu.
I had swine flu back in 2009, and I can definitely relate to a lot of the symptoms listed. I remember being to tired and achy to really move very much even though I hadn't done anything for a week. I had a fever of over 100, and I would have chills one second and be overheating the next. I also had a headache and my throat was sore. Since my symptoms weren't extremely bad and I wasn't at an age where it was concerning, I just had to wait for my body to fight it off.
DeleteHepatitis A is a very contagious liver infection that is caused by the hepatitis A virus. Symptoms of this disease include fatigue, loss of appetite and itching. Symptoms will usually show up 2 - 6 weeks after being exposed to the hepatitis A virus. Causes for catching the hepatitis A virus are if an individual comes in contact with the stool and blood of an infected person about 15 - 45 days before symptoms occur and during the first week of illness. There is a vaccine for hepatitis A along with hepatitis B.
ReplyDeleteThe flu is a viral infection, that develops suddenly. Symptoms:a fever over 100'f, muscle pain and fatigue, a headache, chills and sweats, and also a dry cough. The flu is caused by the influenza virus, which can be found anywhere. There is a vaccine for it. A prescription drug to treat it is tamiflu.
ReplyDeleteHepatitis B
ReplyDeleteSome of the symptoms are:
-Abdominal pain
-Dark urine
-Fever
-Joint pain
-Loss of appetite
-Nausea and vomiting
-Weakness and fatigue
-Yellowing of your skin and the whites of your eyes (jaundice)
Hepatitis B is caused by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). The virus can be transmitted through blood, semen or other body fluids.
Common ways HBV is transmitted
-mother to child
-sharing of needles
-sexual contact
-accidental needle sticks
There's the Hepatitis B vaccine. It is given as a series of three or four injections over the period of 6 months. You can't get Hepatitis B from the vaccine. Also to prevent yourself from getting the disease you shouldn't take drugs and share needles, and wear condom during sex. Also be careful at piercing and tattooing places because the artists come in close contact with your blood and can transmit the disease.
You seem like you really learned a lot about this virus. You gave many examples of the symptoms and how it can be transmitted to someone. Good job :). But how likely is it that someone will get this virus? How many people a year are diagnosed with Hepatitis B?
DeleteSo this is a disease of three levels: A,B,and C, C being the worst case?
DeleteOh, and you can die from Hepatitis B and C?
Cassidy:
DeleteI found out that there are about 1.4 million people with chronic hepatitis B infection in the United States, but worldwide, approximately 350 million people are infected.
Esther: More than 500,000 people die from hepatitis B virus each year.
Also, Hepatitis C is the worst in the way that there is no vaccine for it and it cannot be cured while Hepatitis A and B can just go away.
Group B streptococcus (strep) disease is caused by the B streptococcus bacterium. Some symptoms of group B strep are fever, coughing, lethargy, congestion, and seizures. The cause of group B strep is ingestion at birth of the fluids containing the streptococcus bacteria. Strep B can also can occur in older individuals randomly. This disease is not a virus, so there is no vaccination for it. This disease can be treated by intravenous antibiotics for babies, and for adults, oral antibiotics like penicillin or cephalexin can be used.
ReplyDeleteDoes this have anything to do with Strep throat? They have very similar names and similar symptoms. The only thing that is different is the way the contracted, it seems.
DeleteVaginitis is a bacterial disease. It's symptoms include vaginal irritation, a grayish white foul smelling discharge, a fish-like odor, and pain during sexual intercourse. Bacterial vaginitis is caused by an imbalance, usually an overgrowth, of one of several bacteria present in the vagina. Bacterial vaginitis is more common for women who have had multiple sex partners in a short time. The pill Flagyl is an effective treatment, as MetroGel and Cleocin, which is applied to the vagina twice a day for for one week.
ReplyDeleteGood job researching Kalil. Is there an age that Vaginitis occurs at more than others? Such as old age (55+)?
DeleteThe ear infection (middle ear) is most often a bacterial or viral infection that effects the middle ear. The symptoms for children are,Ear pain, especially when lying down,Difficulty hearing or responding to sounds, &Fever of 100 F (38 C) or higher. For adults they get ear pain, sore throat, diminished hearing, & Drainage of fluid from the ear. The ear infections is caused by a bacterium or virus in the middle ear. This infection often results from another illness — cold, flu or allergy — that causes congestion and swelling of the nasal passages, & throat. Ear drops, pain medication, & antibiotics are things that can help get rid of a ear virus.
ReplyDeletewhy is the infection called middle ear? and how is it spread?
DeleteI remember these things. They were so incredibly painful. I had ear infections a lot when I was younger. I have had to miss school because they were so painful. Luckily thay gave me delicious pick medicine which tasted great. After that I would wish I woiuld get an ear infection just so I could have the medicine.
DeleteMeasles is a disease caused by a virus. Symptoms can include: Fever, dry cough, runny nose, sore throat, inflamed eyes, sensitivity to light, Koplik's spots, tiny while with blue- white centers found in the mouth, and skin rash of large flat spots that run into each other. The cause of measles is an extremely contagious virus in the nose and throat mucus. The disease can spread from contact with people who have measles. There is a vaccination for measles, and the use of it has almost eliminated the disease in the U.S.
ReplyDeleteDiphtheria is a rare bacterial disease. Victims of this disease will experience a thick grey mucus covering their mouth and throat, making it exceedingly difficult to breathe. Diphtheria used to be quite common, until widespread vaccinations put it nearly to an end. cases still turn up, and if not treated immediately, death is likely. antibiotics used to treat diphtheria include penicillin and erythromycin.
ReplyDeleteHow do people get the disease, and is it contagious?
DeleteShingles is a disease caused by a virus. Shingles symptoms include: Pain, burning, numbness or tingling, red rash that begins a few days after the pain,fluid-filled blisters that break open and crust over, and itching. The cause of Shingles is a virus called varicella-zoster. This is the same virus as Chickenpox and anyone who's had Chickenpox can develop into having Shingles. After the recovery from chickenpox, the virus can enter your nervous system and stay dormant for years. At some point, the virus might reactivate and travel along your nerves to your skin creating shingles. There are two vaccinations to prevent Shingles: one against chickenpox (varicella) vaccine and one for shingles (varicella-zoster.
ReplyDeleteThere's no cure for shingles but medicine can be taken to reduce the pain and the duration of the disease. Also some antibiotics can be applied directly to the skin to stop the infection of the blisters.
DeleteAIDS is a life threatening disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Its symptoms can be varied depending on the phase of the infection. Most people who get this disease get a flu like sickness a month or 2 after the virus has entered their system. Other possible symptoms are fever, muscle soreness, rash, headache, sore throat, mouth or genital ulcers, swollen lymph glands, joint pain, night sweats and diarrhea. Supposedly scientists studied a disease similar to HIV in some chimps and monkey's blood in Africa and contact with their blood when butchering or cooking may have spread the virus to humans. HIV turns into AIDS because HIV destroys CD4 cells - specific kind of white blood cell that helps your body fight disease. Once you have under a certain amount of CD4 cells you are diagnosed with AIDS. This disease is not curable but it is manageable. Drugs such as Non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, protease inhibitors and more need to be combined to control AIDS and HIV. Overall, this disease is very scary because it can easily lead to death if not dealt with right away. Also it has been the cause for many deaths in some countries.
ReplyDeleteHow exactly do the drugs help control AIDS?
DeleteChickenpox is a very common viral infection that is extremely contageous. The symptoms of chickenpox are a red itchy rash resembling insect bites, fever, and stomach ache. Chickenpox is caused by a certain type of virus and is spread easily. There is a vaccine for chickenpox.
ReplyDeleteSwine flu is caused by an influenza virus first recognized in spring 2009, near the end of the usual Northern Hemisphere flu season. Some symptoms include Fever,Cough, Sore throat, ache, Fatigue Diarrhea, and Vomiting. Since it ca be spread just as easily as the flu, there are vaccines for it. However like the flu there is no treatment for symptom relief, if you are pregnant or under 5 or over 65 or have other medical conditions you may be hospitalized.
ReplyDeleteIs there different vaccines for different types of the flu? or is there just one big flu shot that covers everything? also why does it take a more serious affect on people that are a certain age or pregnant? :)
DeleteInfluenza is a viral infection/ disease that can be very scary and life threatening. Some symptoms of this infection is a sore thoart, fatigue, diarrhea, raising in temperature, abdominal pain, severe headache, and chills. Causes of this infection RNA viruses and through transmission (either direct, airborne, and contact transmission). There are treatments for this virus infection. They include, just keeping healthy hygiene up like washing your hands, covering all coughs and sneezes, saying home when sick, wipe down surfaces daily, and getting a vaccination.
ReplyDelete-Acne is caused by bacteria
ReplyDelete-The symptoms are: Blackheads, Whiteheads(below the skin surface), Nodules(large and firm lumps under skin), Pustules(pus filled yellow lumps on skin), Pimples(red spots with no pus), Cysts(a sac filled with pus under the skin tissue), Scarring
-Acne can be caused by: stress, diet, hormones, evolutionary biology, vitamin deficiency, and some other things
-If you suffer from acne there are tons of different creams and medicine to put on your skin. One of the most popular ones is Proactive, but people with really really bad acne can make appointments with dermatologists to help find a solution to their problem.
Why do some people who live in the same area and have similar diets have such drastic changes in the seriousness of the acne? Some of my friends who tend to have the same skin type as me (normal-oily) get pimples and blackheads all the time, while others such as myself don't struggle with this issue.
DeleteAIDS is a disease caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, or HIV. HIV weakens the immune system, and after the immune system is affected enough, the disease becomes AIDS. While the actual virus doesn't have any visible symptoms, people easily catch diseases when affected with HIV/AIDS, and once they catch a disease, the immune system is unable to fight it off, even if the disease is very easily attacked by healthy immune systems. HIV/AIDS is an STD, but it can also be passed from mother to fetus or by infected blood entering another person. Even though this disease is a virus, a vaccine has not been invented yet and it is presently not curable. In first world countries like the United States, there are drugs to slow the development of AIDS and to help raise T-cell counts in affected individuals. However, these drugs are not widely available in many third world countries, especially in Africa, leading to millions of deaths every year.
ReplyDeleteMeasles is a virus that usually effects children and can be fatal. Symptoms of this disease are fever, rash, cough, and a runny nose. Vaccines have been created to prevent children from getting infected with measles although some parents choose not to get their children vaccinated.
ReplyDeleteThe parents that choose to not get their children vaccinated-why is that? Are the vaccinations risky to the children with measles?
DeletePheumonia - inflamation in the lungs
ReplyDelete(Ms. Sosnoski i was not shure if i could do this disease because it can be caused by both viruses and bacteria.)
Pheumonia can be cause by either a virus or bacteria, as stated above.
Symptomes are fever, cough, shortness of breath, muscle pain, and fatigue.
There is not a vacination for pheumonia but there are antivirals to reduce the sideaffects. If it caused by a bacteria there are antibiotics, but there are many kinds of antibiotics.
How is Pheumonia transmitted? How does the bacteria or the virus get into somebody's body and why do they cause the disease. When i ask why i mean what happens inside the body that causes the disease e.g. non-beneficial cell mutations
DeletePneumonia is a disease caused by bacteria or viruses that infect the lungs. Symptoms include fever, chest pain, chills, difficulty breathing, and fatigue. The causes of pneumonia are usually bacteria that you encounter in your normal day, but are an especially strong kind of common bacteria. Also, pneumonia is often caused by multiple kinds of bacteria in your lungs at the same time, which causes more serious cases of the disease. Pneumonia is relatively difficult to treat because it is hard to diagnose which kind of bacteria, or virus, is in your lungs. Most kinds of bacteria are easily killed with different kinds of drugs, but it may take some time for the doctor to figure out what drugs each individual needs. If pneumonia is being caused by viruses, it is common to take antivirus medication, since there are no antibiotics that effectively treat virus-caused pneumonia.
ReplyDeleteI had pneumonia during the summer of 2007. Pneumonia is a really uncomfortable disease to have. I remember every time I breathed in, I would and feel crackling in my lungs and it was difficult to take big breaths. I would also constantly have chills, but be sweating at the same time, just like you would if you had the fever. I also was still experiencing some of the symptoms when school started that year and that wasn't very fun. Eventually, the icky medicine I was taking paid off and I could breath well again.
DeleteAnthrax is a disease caused by the bacteria Bacillus anthracis. This bacteria causes a variety of symptoms, including skin sores, nausea, vomiting, and shock. It normally spreads through a wound/opening in the skin, but can also be contracted from contaminated animals and meat. Many antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin and doxycycline, are effective in treating anthrax, but prompt treatment is essential, as allowing the disease to develop significantly lessens the chances of survival.
ReplyDeleteI read about tooth decay and cavities since it is very common among teenagers and adults. It is caused by bacteria in your mouth. You can tell if you have a cavity if there is a hole in a tooth, it hurts when you bite down, you have a tooth ache a lot, and/or there is a sharp pain when you eat something. This condition is caused by not taking care of your teeth by brushing them in the morning and at night before you go to bed. You can also go to a dentist regularly to check up on if you are doing a good job cleaning your teeth. If you have a cavity you need to go to the dentist so they can take care of it by cleaning your tooth and putting a filling in the whole so there won't be anymore pain when you eat, but the best way to make sure this doesn't happen is just take two minutes out of your very busy life and just brush your teeth.
ReplyDeletechicken pox is caused by a virus. The symptoms of chickenpox are red, itchy rahses. small liquid-filled blisters that break open and crust over, or a fever. There is a vaccine for the chickenpox
ReplyDeletePink eye can be caused by viruses and bacteria. Pink eye is an inflammation or infection of the mucous membrane that lines your eye.
ReplyDeleteSymptoms are mainly eye discomfort and redness. An unusual sensitivity to light is also a common symptom.
Pink eye is caused by rubbing your eyes after poor hand washing or you can catch pink eye by being around those with pink eye.
There are no current vaccines for pink eye and there are special creams and eye drops that help
I have had several friends in elementary school get pink eye. They were out of school for a fairly long time. It seems like it would be a horrible condition to get since your eyes feel discomfort and all you want to do is rub them, when you aren't supposed to.
DeleteIsn't it really contagious? Does it spread because of someone touching something the infected touched?
DeleteAlzheimer's disease is caused by neither a virus or bacteria, the cause is still unknown. There are many sypmtoms of Alzheimer's disease. The disease causes occasional memory lapses, disorientation and misinterpreting spatial relationships, trouble speaking and writing, difficulty thinking and reasoning, challenge in making judgements and decisions, struggle in planning and performing familiar tasks, and changes in personality and behavior. These symptoms become worse as the Alzheimer's disease progresses. For most people, the disease is results from a combination of genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors that affect the brain overtime. Alzheimer's disease medications and strategies can temporarily improve symptoms, maximize function and gain independence. Social services and support networks are also important. Scientists are trying to discover treatments that prevent Alzheimer's or slow its progression.
ReplyDeleteSo is alzheimer's the result of mutations?
DeleteChickenpox is a viral infection, and is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. Many people get chickenpox at some point during their life. It's a very contagious disease. Chickenpox is usually mild, but can sometimes lead to other issues. Some symptoms of chickenpox are itchy rashes, blisters, headaches, and fevers. There is a vaccine.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering what other more serious issues chickenpox could lead to. Is it fatal? What kind of conditions could cause chickenpox to become more serious?
DeleteLactose intolerance is caused by cells of your liver. The symptom of this disease is a tumor (built-up tissue) but liver cancer is very difficult to stop, due to the fact that it can take up to 30 years for the the disease to be obvious, and by the time the tumor can be seen with the naked eye it is in a very late stage. The cause of the disease is extreme untreated Hepatitis B, a virus, which can be caught from contaminated blood products, used needles or sexual contact, but is frequent among Asian children from contamination at birth or even biting among children at play. The treatment for it is surgical removal, but often the tumor is too large to remove. However, Hepatitis B can be treated easily unless it is chronic, and in that case the only options are medication to slow it down or a liver transplant.
ReplyDeletelyme disease is caused by bacteria. Some symptoms are a red bulls eye rash, and flu-like symptoms. The disease is caused by a bacteria found on deer ticks, when a tick bites a human it can transfer the disease. There are effective antibiotics.
ReplyDeleteIs lyme disease contagous?
Deleteno its not contagious, the only way you can get it is though ticks.
DeleteIs lyme disease common, or is it pretty hard to get?
DeleteAIDS is the disease caused by virus.
ReplyDeleteAIDS doesn't directly harm the human body. AIDS usually tends to hide in the T cells, which are used for an important immune system. After being dormant for few monthes or even years(which can go about 10 years), AIDS DNA in the T cells starts to activate and kill off the cells, making immune system to weaken. So basically the symptom for AIDS are different everytimes. One thing in common is people with AIDS is always sickly and can die from small scratch. The cause of this is from injection of infected blood or sexually transmitted. There is a rumor that kiss can spread the AIDS, but according to scientists, you have to drink few gallons of saliva to get infected, but breast milk can infect the others. Because AIDS are dormant for some time, using drugs to extend the death of the patient are made, but currently, there aren't any vaccination.
So if someone has AIDS, does that person have no choice but to die? Is there any people who survived from this disease? How can AIDs be prevented?
DeleteYersinia Pestis: The Plague (Pneumonic Specifically)
ReplyDeleteIs this disease caused by a bacteria or virus? It is caused by bacteria.
What are the symptoms of the disease? Difficulty breathing, high fever, nausea and vomiting, weak muscles, and a cough (with bloody sputum)
What is the cause of the disease? Being bitten by fleas that have recently bitten infected rats, squirrels, rabbits, prairie dogs, or chipmunks. You may also get the Pneumonic plague by inhaling "infectious droplets" coughed in the air by a sick animal or person.
What antibiotics are effective for treating it? First, if you have any form of the plague, you will be immediately admitted to a hospital. Second, you will receive powerful antibiotics such as: Streptomycin, Gentamicin, Doxycycline (Vibramycin), Ciprofloxacin (Cipro), and/or Chloramphenicol.
the disease is caused by a virus, the symptoms are nausea, headaches, and vomiting. the cause of disease is by picking it up from someone. There is a vaccination for it.
ReplyDeletewhat is the disease called?
DeleteH1N1 flu (sometimes called “swine flu”) is a respiratory virus and is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. This new virus was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. This virus is spreading from person-to-person worldwide, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread. The symptoms of H1N1 flu virus in people include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Spread of the H1N1 virus is thought to occur in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing, sneezing or talking by people with influenza. Vaccines to protect against H1N1 are widely available.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the difference between the H1N1 flu virus and the regular seasonal flu?
DeleteIs there an antibiotic for this flu
DeleteThere are many similarities between the H1N1 virus and the seasonal flu, they are two different strains of influenza. Testing showed that many parts of this virus were similar to the flu viruses usually found in pigs. Because symptoms of seasonal flu are very similar to H1N1, you will not be able to distinguish between H1N1 and seasonal flu on your own.
DeleteIs this disease caused by a bacteria or virus?
ReplyDeleteScarlet fever is caused by bacteria that is common in children from ages 5-15
What are the symptoms of the disease?
Some symptoms of scarlet fever are red rash, red lines, flushed face, and strawberry tongue.
What is the cause of the disease?
Scarlet fever is caused by the same bacteria that causes strep throat. The bacteria releases a toxin that produces the red rash.
If this disease is a bacterial disease, what antibiotics are effective for treating it?
Some antibiotics for treating scarlet fever are ibuprofen and tylenol to reduce the pain for controlling the fever and reducing the pain in the throat. It also helps if you keep hydrated by drinking a lot of water and gargling salt water to ease the pain as well.
Rubella is a viral infection that is rare in the United States, but occurs often in other parts of the world. The symptoms of rubella include fever, headache, inflamed red eyes, stuffy nose, enlarged lymph nodes, aching joints, and a rash that spreads from the face to the feet. It's spread just like a how a cold is spread. It can be passed through a sneeze or a cough. It can also be spread if a woman is pregnant. She could pass the disease to her baby and eventually, the baby would die from it. A person is usually contagious with rubella from 10 days before the rash appears to a couple weeks after it disappears. Often times, a person can spread the disease without even knowing they have it and before they're able to do something about it. The MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine is usually given to infants and it is very widespread throughout the country. That's why the disease is rare in the Untied States.
ReplyDeleteWhat countries have a high frequency of rubella infections? Can you get a vaccine before going if you hadn't received one as an infant?
DeleteCountries that have a high frequency of rubella infections are countries who don't have immunization programs, like Nigeria and other countries in Africa. It is possible to get a vaccine for rubella if you haven't gotten one yet, but make sure you aren't pregnant or plan to get pregnant soon after if you want to get a vaccine :]
Deletecan it be fatal?
Deletethe west nile virus is a virus that gets transmitted by mosquitoes. some patients have no symptoms resulting from this virus but others can develop a life threatening brain inflammation. if you start to have headaches , sudden feeling of weakness or disorientation then immediate medical help is necessary. although currently there is no vaccination for it
ReplyDeletethe only way to prevent getting the disease is to cover yourself from the mosquitos
i researched tularemia and there were different types of it so i only did the symptoms of the most common form which is ulceroglandular tularemia.
ReplyDelete1. It is cuased by the bacteria Francisella tularensis
2. symptoms: skin ulcer at the site of infection, swollen and painful lymph glands, fever, chills, headache, exhaustion
3.causes: insect bites, contaminated food or water, airbourne bacteria, exposure to dead or sick animals
4. Anti biotics vary depending on the form of tularemia. strptomycin and gentanicin are ijected into a muscle or vein and tetracycine is taken orally.
Is it fatal?
DeleteScarelet fever is caused by bacteria, the same exact bacteria that cause strep throat. The symptoms of the disease, red rashes, flushed face, red lines, and strawberry tounge, can be spread from the throat to another part of the body by just a cough or sneeze. If scarlet fever is left without anti-biotics, which exist, it can spread to the blood or even turn into rheumatic fever that affect heart and nevous system. To prevent scarlet fever, always wash your hands, cover your mouth, and don't share stuff with people, the usual.
ReplyDeleteThe virus Hepatitis A is a contagious liver infection. The Symptoms of Hepatitus are loss of apetite, itching, fatigue and other various malodies which show up about a month into having this virus. this is usually caused when one comes into intimite contact with a carrier for the virus. the desease usually becomes evident 30 days later. There is a vaccine for hepatitis A.
ReplyDeleteThe flu is a viral infection. Symptoms are a fever, achy body, chills or sweats, and fatigue. For most people, getting over the flu isnt very difficult and will only keep you out of school for a few days, but for some people, such as the elderly or pregnant women, many complications can arise. There is a vaccination for it, and people are very strongly encouraged to get the vaccine around flu season.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree that elder people are really weak at getting over with the flu. My grandfater, who was really healthy, once got a flu and unfortunatley the flu virus infected his brain. Once it infected his brain, he acted as if had a mental disease and couldn't even recognize me. After few weeks later he died... I clearly could see flu is not a thing to ignore.
DeleteI also learned that the flu virus can spread very quickly and is very hard to get rid of once it's caught. But I would like to know if the flue could ever be beneficial to anyone? I've heard some viruses can be beneficial but I wasn't sure about this one. I've had the flu many times, and it's a horrible experience, and that's why I'm now always caught up on my flu shots :)
DeleteSmallpox is caused by viruses. Fever, overall discomfort, headache, severe fatigue, vomiting, and diarrhea are symptoms during the incubation period. Later, red spots appear and they turn into pus, and scabs form. They eventually leave scars, and leave deadly results such as death. A vaccine can prevent smallpox, but the risk of the vaccine's side effects is too high to currently justify routine vaccination for people at low risk of exposure to the smallpox virus.
ReplyDeleteThis is very interesting, and you obviously researched this topic well enough to write the main points of it. Good Job James.
ReplyDeleteCan this disease be prevented with a vaccine?

Leukemia can be caused by a virus in humans but that rarely occurs. Most if the time Leukemia is caused by environmental factors such as smoking or by genetic inheritance. Some symptoms include fatigue, easy bruising, and weak bones. A vaccine for Leukemia has recently begun being used.
